Show Notes

"According to the science of complexity, when a living system is in a state of equilibrium, it is less responsive to change.  Prolonged sameness can therefore leave a system vulnerable and open to major disaster.

An example in nature would be the absolute prevention of forest fires.  To keep the parks open to visitors, we see a constant emphasis on fire prevention.  But fires are a natural part of the cycle of regeneration and cleansing for that system.  Preventing even small fires allows a buildup of the undergrowth so that when a fire does occur, rather than just cleaning out the groundcover, it destroys even the tall mature trees.  In recent years, we have seen the stories of raging fires, consuming valuable trees, expensive homes, and businesses as they are fueled by years of undergrowth.

Is the sameness and constancy in your life a blessing or is it leaving you vulnerable?  Is 20 years on the same job a sign of great loyalty or has it made you complacent and  unaware of the changes that have occurred in the workplace?  Do you resist change at all costs?..."
