“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”
- James Michener

SPEAKER_01Well, hi there, and welcome back to another episode of the All Around Growth Podcast. My name is Rob Kaiser and I am your host. Today is Friday, August 12th, 2022. And the title of today's show is Three Months Into the Great Resignation. And in today's show, I'm going to provide an update on my career goals and describe to you how they've changed over the course of the last three months. And actually how they've changed over the course of the entire year. Because going into the 2022 year, I had set some one-year goals as part of the work I did with the 2022 goal setting workbook. Excuse me, which I will link to in the show notes. Now, this workbook I began working on in November. And basically, the way that the workbook functions is that it is a framework where we outline three-year goals and then work backwards. And then part of that process includes setting one-year goals, including career goals. And what's important to point out is that when we look at all of these goals in life, you know, or all these aspects in life, rather, financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, and career. I always wondered if there was a reason for that order. And indeed there is. Because when we work them in that order, we soon realize that our career is an outcome of knowing what we want in the other six areas of life. Right? Your career should be a reflection of the life that you want. And once you decide on the life that you want, it becomes obvious what kind of work embraces that. Okay, and the 2022 goal setting workbook can help you plan your work around the life that you want. All right, and all of that sounds good because it is good. Those words aren't mine, these come from not only the 2022 goal setting workbook, but also 48 days to the work that you love. Alright, so links to all of this will be in the show notes. But let's examine what my career goals were for 2022 because this isn't quite the sales pitch for all of that, but I do endorse it highly, which is why I talk about it. And I'm merely sharing with you my experiences, okay? So my career goals for 2022, my career plan for this year involved one of two options, which was having a significant change in perspective or mindset through proactive communication, or two quit and execute the forty-eight days plan as outlined in the book. Alright. Um I uh I I I did indeed communicate proactively, but was unable to achieve a significant change in perspective or mindset. And um, you know, decided to uh decided to quit when, you know, management and myself could not really reach a point of agreement on how uh I was to manage the department in which I was responsible for. So I, you know, it appeared as though it was no longer a good fit, and so I decided to leave the company three months ago, basically, to the day. And it's it's it's challenging. It's challenging because this wasn't this wasn't how I planned it, right? Like I was planning on leaving the company someday. But that was like a couple, three years down the road. So yeah. Three months ago to the day basically, and much sooner than I was planning, I left my job. And accordingly, I updated my career goals and some other goals on uh May 17th, just a few days after my last official day of employment, which was on a Friday. First real day of uh new employment was that following day, the first farmer's market of the year on Saturday, May 14th. And then finally, I just took a couple of days to relax before um and and work on some of these new goals, and uh took a couple days to relax and and really chew on all of this before engaging in some side work, which I subsequently got fired from before actually beginning this plan, the 48 days plan, on May 30th. Now, at that same time, I began working with dad full-time here at York Meadow Farm. Now, in the interim, I like I had been doing some work on uh on the side, the side work that I got fired from, and I was working uh here and there with dad. But after you know, after I got canned, I began working with dad full-time. Now, for those of you who may be new to the show and not really familiar with what York Meadow Farm is, York Meadow Farm is the family farm and homestead where I reside here in Medina County, which is located in Northeast Ohio. I will go ahead and link to the farm in the show notes, which will give you the opportunity to sign up for our monthly newsletter, and that will give you more news and updates about all the things that are going on here, including but not limited to my new uh my or my work with dad. I'm not sure how to define it yet. Is it's a job, I'm not really employed, not really a contract, we're figuring it all out as we go. But I'm working here with dad, we're working together and we're growing the business. So, yeah, sign up for the newsletter for more. There's information about our bath and body products, the natural fermented foods that we make and sell, and also Cody and his work up front managing the market gardens and everything that he does with our tenant farmer program. There's actually quite a bit of activity going on here, and uh that is something else that is factoring into the whole life plan, the career goals. But um more on that later, and more on that down the road. So, you know, by the time I'd left the job, I'd already made the commitment to work each market and contribute more and more into the farm operations this year because, like I said, I was planning to leave my job eventually and hopefully transition into this full-time while working there part-time, but that's not how things went, and accordingly I had to pivot, right? So, for you know, about three weeks into June, I was working through the 48 days plan while working here on the homestead, and while it certainly didn't feel like a full-time job here on the homestead, making fermented foods with dad and selling them at the farmer's market with my parents, the reality was that I was working damn near 40 hours a week with them, in addition to securing some of the new side jobs that I had gotten in June and July, and that, you know, right as the well, June, which led into July and right as the summer season began in late June, I you know, I caught myself running out of steam. Like I was all over the map, and I began to feel like I was burning out, and I fell off the wagon and into some old patterns of behavior. And luckily, you know, I caught myself before things spiraled out of control too much, and I decided to kick my ass in gear, step it up, and you know, address some of those habits, along with a couple of others, including including quitting tobacco cold turkey, which is something that I have struggled with and never really taken on in that manner before. Uh, and I believe cold turkey is the only way to address any kind of breaking of habit. Um straight up. So, you know, uh I I sat on my goals for a long time as I as I kind of worked through all this shit. Um, you know, people were were telling me that all this was a lot to deal with in life, and there was a lot of transition, and people were even saying that I was, oh, I was doing a good job handling it, I was handling it well. But it didn't really matter, you know, what what I was told because it never really has. At the end of the day, I wasn't really satisfied with the traject the trajectory that I was on, considering the current circumstances I found myself in. So, you know, not too long ago, I made a choice to update some of my goals for the third quarter of 2023, 2022 rather. Kind of getting ahead of myself as I think. Into the future. But uh and and accordingly, you know, if I'm not satisfied with the trajectory that I'm on, considering the circumstances I'm in, then I think it's high time to create a new set of circumstances for myself. Create some new goals for myself. And those goals were in order financial, career, and physical. And today we're talking career. So, what's the new career goal? The new career goal is to dedicate four hours a week to the online store on the York Meadow Farm website in order to prepare for the launch of the store on the first day of autumn 2022. And that's September 22nd. Alright, so as of January 31st, that's been the new goal, and I'm proud to say that I've been sticking with it. Doesn't really seem like much. Four hours a week. And uh it's a little over a month away. So we're starting to talk about it. I guess we're gonna call it a soft launch because the reality is uh you know, we want to rebuild the website down the road, and um but this is what we've got for now. So soft launch, hard launch, whatever. Um that's the new goal, and uh that's what we're doing, working four hours a week on the online store in preparation for the launch in September. So, speaking of work, with that said, I I should probably conclude the show and get to work myself today. We got a short day in the kitchen. Basically, uh, we need to pack up some bread and butter pickles, prepare for the market tomorrow, just get packed, take inventory, and um and then beyond that, it's just gonna be a longer day on the tractor, getting caught up on some mowing in the field that we fell behind on while the tire was getting repaired. So there you have it, guys. Updated career goals for 2022, and yeah, it's it's kind of hard to believe, but we are in the third quarter of 2022. There's we're coming up on 40 days of summer remaining, just about a month before a month and some before the first day of fall. And uh, you know, it's time to think about where we've where we're at for uh for the goals that we've set for the year, the resolutions that we've made for the year. And if you find yourself in a point where you're not really sticking to the resolutions that you've made, consider not making resolutions, consider setting goals. And if you're not really sure how to do that, consider checking out the 2022 goal setting workbook. Because um, as I look back at this, you know, utilizing this workbook, it's really helped me a lot. It's really helped me to you know, you know, navigate this this time of transition with increased confidence and focus. Because the reality is a lot has changed over the past few months. A lot's changed over the past year, a lot's changed over the past two years since this podcast has even been a thing. And think about that. A lot's changed, most likely, over the past two years in your life as well. And this 2022 goal setting workbook hasn't been part of my life for the whole two years, but it's been part of my life for the past uh nine months or so, and it can be part of your life too, because it's helped me and I'm confident that it can help you, and that's why I talk about it so frequently, and in large part have included it within the structure of the show.
